Day by Day Program
Discover Albertine Rift endemics and explore Uganda’s most biologically rich top birding destinations, including Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, and Echuya Forest Reserve. Get the rare opportunity to see the most localized and endangered bird species. Uganda boasts 24 Albertine Rift endemics, and this itinerary targets the highest concentration of them. They are birding havens for species like African Green Broadbill, Shelley’s Crimsonwing, Rwenzori Turaco, and Handsome Francolin. Paired with cultural experiences from the Batwa community and scenic hikes through bamboo and montane forest zones, this tour seamlessly blends natural richness with heritage encounters for a complete highland birding safari.
Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you’ll be welcomed by your birding guide and transferred to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, enjoy optional birding at the Entebbe Botanical Gardens, where you might spot the Orange weaver, African grey parrot, and Great blue turaco. Dinner and overnight in Entebbe.
After an early breakfast, embark on a scenic drive southwest through Uganda’s lush hills and terraced landscapes to Mgahinga. En route stops in papyrus swamps may reveal Lesser jacana, Papyrus canary, and White-winged warbler. Arrive at your lodge nestled near the Virunga Volcanoes for rest and preparation for forest birding.
Spend the day in the bamboo and montane forests of Mgahinga, seeking Albertine Rift endemics such as the Rwenzori batis, Regal sunbird, Stripe-breasted tit, and Archer’s robin-chat. The scenic trails also offer sightings of the Rwenzori turaco and Dusky crimsonwing. Enjoy panoramic views of the Virunga peaks and cultural insights from nearby communities.
After breakfast, drive to Echuya Forest Reserve, a mid-altitude forest corridor between Mgahinga and Bwindi. The forest is excellent for spotting Grauer’s swamp warbler, Rwenzori apalis, and Black-faced apalis. Bird through the forest edge and interior trails, then continue to your lodge near Bwindi’s Ruhija sector for the night.
This is a prime day for endemics. Descend into the famous Mubwindi Swamp Trail, a hotspot for the African green broadbill, Grauer’s rush warbler, and Short-tailed warbler. The trail winds through lush montane forest and offers chances to see the Red-throated Alethe and Yellow-eyed black flycatcher. Packed lunch will be provided in the field.
Today, explore the bamboo-rich habitats above Ruhija, searching for species like the Handsome francolin, Cinnamon-chested bee-eater, and White-headed woodhoopoe. This area is also good for Mountain masked apalis and Stripe-breasted tit. Optional community visits can be arranged in the afternoon to experience Batwa culture.
Enjoy birding along The Neck, the forested corridor connecting Ruhija to Buhoma, where you’ll find species such as Cassin’s flycatcher, Many-colored bushshrike, and Black bee-eater. Arrive in Buhoma in the afternoon and relax at the lodge nestled at the edge of the forest.
Spend the day on the Buhoma Waterfall Trail, a productive path for forest birding. Look out for species like Bar-tailed trogon, White-bellied robin-chat, and Red-faced woodland warbler. The trail also offers opportunities to see primates like L’Hoest’s monkey and cultural interactions with the Batwa people.
Depending on your interest, you can choose to participate in a once-in-a-lifetime gorilla trekking experience or continue birding along forest edge communities for sunbirds, weavers, and greenbuls. Either activity provides a rich blend of wildlife viewing and immersive natural encounters.
After breakfast, begin the long but scenic return to Entebbe, with stopovers for birding and lunch. You may spot some savannah species and wetland birds along the way. Your trip ends with a drop-off at the airport or your hotel in Entebbe.
With our exceptional personalised safaris throughout East Africa, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the debut wildlife safaris in Tanzania, magical gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda, and experiential cultural tours that take you to the soul of Africa.

Olive’s passing in 2017, when Cheryl was just 19, became a defining moment in her journey.
Having been involved in the foundations of Sunset Hotel Entebbe and Olive Safari Uganda from a young age, Cheryl stepped up to manage the businesses alongside Christer. Under his mentorship, she navigated the complexities of entrepreneurship and discovered her passion for tourism.
With a Master’s degree in Business Administration and hands-on leadership, Cheryl has been instrumental in maintaining loyal clientele at Sunset Hotel Entebbe, adapting it to post-COVID standards, and expanding Olive Safari Uganda. As a certified tour guide for Uganda, Tanzania and Zanzibar, she remains committed to upholding her mother’s vision of exceptional service and unforgettable travel experiences.
Christer, a Swedish education consultant with over 40 years of experience guiding travelers across Africa, co-founded Olive Safari Uganda with a deep passion for the continent’s wonders. His extensive journeying, particularly through Zimbabwe, Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya, enriched his understanding of Africa’s landscapes and cultures. As a consultant, he also contributed to education and development, notably establishing an automotive school in Zimbabwe. His work with the Global Journey program brought him to Uganda, where he collaborated with municipalities and fell in love with the country’s heritage.
During this time, he met Olive, whose exceptional leadership and organizational skills later turned their professional relationship into a personal one. Their shared vision led to the creation of Olive Safari Uganda in the early 2000s, followed later by Sunset Hotel Entebbe. While Christer split his time in Sweden managing the Global Journey program, Olive oversaw daily operations. Today, Olive Safari Uganda embodies Christer’s seasoned expertise as a guide and strategic insight, paired with Olive’s dedication, delivering outstanding safaris that showcase Uganda’s beauty and beyond.
Ayebale Olive, co-founder of Olive Safari Uganda, brought over 20 years of community service experience into the world of tourism. As secretary to Entebbe’s Mayor, she honed her skills in program management and international partnerships, playing a key role in the Global Journey program that linked Uganda and Sweden.
It was through this program that she met Christer—three years after the passing of her first husband, while raising three children. United by a shared passion for travel and discovery, they founded Olive Safari Uganda in the early 2000s. Their commitment to exceptional service quickly set the company apart.
As demand grew, they expanded their vision by establishing Sunset Hotel Entebbe, creating a welcoming space for travelers exploring Uganda. Olive’s legacy lives on, shaping the company’s dedication to authentic and unforgettable safari experiences
