Kibale National Park

Overview

Often hailed as the “Primate Capital of the World,” Kibale National Park in western Uganda is the country’s most popular destination for chimpanzee tracking. With over 1,500 chimpanzees and 12 other primate species, the park offers an unrivaled opportunity to observe our closest relatives in a rich, tropical rainforest ecosystem. Its accessibility, high success rate of sightings, and immersive habituation experiences make Kibale a top choice for wildlife lovers and eco-tourists.

Location

Kibale National Park is located near the town of Fort Portal in western Uganda, about 5–6 hours’ drive from Kampala. It lies near other tourist hotspots, such as Queen Elizabeth National Park and Semuliki.

Activities

The main attraction is chimpanzee tracking, which boasts a success rate of over 90%. Visitors can also opt for the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience, which allows for up to four hours of interaction with chimps. Additionally, nature walks, birding (with over 375 species), and encounters with other primates, such as red colobus and L’Hoest’s monkeys, enhance the experience.

Best Time to Visit

The dry seasons—December to February and June to September—are ideal for chimp tracking, as forest trails are more navigable and chimpanzee sightings more consistent.

Cultural Value

Kibale is surrounded by culturally rich communities, including the Batooro people. Visitors can engage in village walks, experience traditional music, and participate in coffee farming activities, offering insight into local livelihoods and traditions.

Budongo Forest (Murchison Falls Conservation Area)

Overview

Situated in the southern sector of Murchison Falls National Park, Budongo Forest is the largest natural forest in Uganda and hosts around 600 chimpanzees. Renowned for its towering mahogany trees and gentle terrain, Budongo offers a serene, less crowded alternative to Kibale, with excellent opportunities for chimpanzee tracking and forest exploration.

Location

Budongo Forest lies within the Murchison Falls Conservation Area, approximately 4 hours from Kampala and 1–2 hours from the park’s northern wildlife circuit.

Activities

Chimpanzee tracking in Budongo, particularly in the Kaniyo Pabidi area, is conducted with expert guides from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. The forest is also ideal for birdwatching, primate viewing, and nature walks through ancient tree-lined trails. Sightings of other primates and rare bird species, such as the Puffinus illadopsis, make each visit a rewarding experience.

Best Time to Visit

Dry months—December to February and June to August—offer the best conditions for tracking, with fewer mosquitoes and better trail access.

Cultural Value

Budongo is situated near communities of the Banyoro people, known for their rich and deeply rooted oral traditions. Cultural extensions may include village visits and storytelling experiences to learn about traditional forest knowledge and conservation practices.

Kalinzu Forest Reserve

Overview

Located on the edge of Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kalinzu Forest Reserve is a scenic and budget-friendly option for chimpanzee tracking. With approximately 300 chimpanzees and several habituated groups, the forest offers a rich biodiversity and meaningful interactions, particularly for travelers seeking a raw and less commercialized experience.

Location

Kalinzu lies in southwestern Uganda, approximately a one-hour drive from the Mweya sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park and about six hours from Kampala.

Activities

Chimpanzee tracking is the core attraction, led by experienced local guides. Treks often include sightings of black-and-white colobus, blue monkeys, and forest birds. Nature hikes and scenic viewpoints across the Rift Valley escarpment also add depth to the experience.

Best Time to Visit

The forest is best explored during the dry seasons, from June to September and December to February, when the trails are dry and chimpanzee groups are easier to locate.

Cultural Value

Kalinzu borders several traditional villages where travelers can learn about the customs, herbal medicine, and folklore of the Bakonzo and Banyankole communities. These cultural interactions help preserve and share indigenous knowledge linked to forest life.

Cheryl, the eldest daughter of Olive, has embraced the responsibility of carrying forward her mother’s legacy with resilience and determination. After losing her father at the age of six, she was raised by her mother, Olive, with the support of Christer. Olive’s passing in 2017, when Cheryl was just 19, became a defining moment in her journey.

Having been involved in the foundations of Sunset Hotel Entebbe and Olive Safari Uganda from a young age, Cheryl stepped up to manage the businesses alongside Christer. Under his mentorship, she navigated the complexities of entrepreneurship and discovered her passion for tourism.

With a Master’s degree in Business Administration and hands-on leadership, Cheryl has been instrumental in maintaining loyal clientele at Sunset Hotel Entebbe, adapting it to post-COVID standards, and expanding Olive Safari Uganda. As a certified tour guide for Uganda, Tanzania and Zanzibar, she remains committed to upholding her mother’s vision of exceptional service and unforgettable travel experiences.

Founder & CEO: Christer Torstensson

Christer, a Swedish education consultant with over 40 years of experience guiding travelers across Africa, co-founded Olive Safari Uganda with a deep passion for the continent’s wonders. His extensive journeying, particularly through Zimbabwe, Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya, enriched his understanding of Africa’s landscapes and cultures. As a consultant, he also contributed to education and development, notably establishing an automotive school in Zimbabwe. His work with the Global Journey program brought him to Uganda, where he collaborated with municipalities and fell in love with the country’s heritage.

During this time, he met Olive, whose exceptional leadership and organizational skills later turned their professional relationship into a personal one. Their shared vision led to the creation of Olive Safari Uganda in the early 2000s, followed later by Sunset Hotel Entebbe. While Christer split his time in Sweden managing the Global Journey program, Olive oversaw daily operations. Today, Olive Safari Uganda embodies Christer’s seasoned expertise as a guide and strategic insight, paired with Olive’s dedication, delivering outstanding safaris that showcase Uganda’s beauty and beyond.

Ayebale Olive, co-founder of Olive Safari Uganda, brought over 20 years of community service experience into the world of tourism. As secretary to Entebbe’s Mayor, she honed her skills in program management and international partnerships, playing a key role in the Global Journey program that linked Uganda and Sweden.

It was through this program that she met Christer—three years after the passing of her first husband, while raising three children. United by a shared passion for travel and discovery, they founded Olive Safari Uganda in the early 2000s. Their commitment to exceptional service quickly set the company apart.
